POWER OF THE WIND

WIND Energy

Wind power operates without emitting any GHG (Green House Gases), causes no emissions of harmful pollutants, and needs no mining or drilling for fuel.

How does it work?image02702

Wind turbines are a clean and efficient method of turning raw kinetic wind power into electric power. Wind turbines are connected directly to power generators to create electricity. These three bladed structures, mounted on high poles or towers, are typically pointed into the wind using computers and sensors. The wind turbine itself is made up of a rotor mounted to a wind turbine generator which is mounted to a frame and then a tail is mounted on the opposing side of the rotor. If the wind turbine does not have a sensor based system pushing it into the wind, the tail will adjust it manually.

Wind turbines work like this: each system consists of a rotor (“blades”) which converts the wind's energy into rotational shaft energy, a nacelle (“enclosure”) containing a drive train and a generator. So you can easily visualize how wind turbines work. The energy that moves the wind (“kinetic energy”) moves the blades. This energy in turn moves the drive train (“mechanical energy”). This energy is then turned into electricity (“electrical energy”) in the generators and then transferred to home power grids for use in the usual way.

The tower of a wind turbine is the most dominant thing you see of a wind turbine and yet it is not the main component of how wind turbines work. It is there simply to hold the rotors at a height sufficient to make optimal use of the available wind. It also holds the electronic equipment associated with transferring electricity but these could be housed anywhere if there was no tower involved.

 What does it cost?

Who can install it for me?

There are several local companies that do residential installation of wind power.
